Joaquín Morales is a twenty one year old Mexican-American cinematographer and director fascinated by exploring “the unseen” and the overlooked. Although a Chicago native, he has also grown up in Kansas and Puerto Rico which is what he attributes to understanding what it takes to learn how to be a conscious image maker. In some ways, it all started with music. At just seventeen years old he found himself documenting the Chicago music scene which sparked his attraction towards “fly on the wall” and emotionally realistic cinematography–a voice that lives within his narrative and documentary work today. His passion for documenting the human experience has allowed him to collaborate with a multitude of musical artists ranging from creators like Big Sean, Lil Kim, redveil, Pi’erre Bourne, Flo Rida, Verzache, Lucys, and others which has allowed him to observe human emotions through an unfiltered lens. Now in his final year of undergraduate film studies at Connecticut College, he continues to discover that his films often serve as “meditations” and invitations (aka “quantum cinema”) to take a pause from the chaos of life: something we rarely get the chance to say yes to.
