YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES UNLIMITED MAYOR FRANK G. JACKSON’S SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM POSITION: Graphics Instructor REPORTS TO: Youth Communications Lead Supervisor SUMMARY: The Mayor Frank G. Jackson’s Youth Summer Employment Program is a summer job program for City of Cleveland residents 14 to 18 years of age. The program consists of 14 team projects and over 25 individual projects facilitated by Youth Opportunities Unlimited and the City of Cleveland. The Graphics Supervisor is responsible for leading the graphics team in drafting and completing their various projects. The supervisor will teach youth how to use graphic design software, namely Adobe Suite. Youth employees will be working on individual projects that will support initiatives in other groups, and materials to be mass-produced and made available to our stakeholders and the public at large. He or she will have to work with supervisors in and outside the communication team to complete assignments. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Maintain a safe and secure working environment for youth. 2. Ensure that each task meets basic quality standards as outlined by the City of Cleveland, the partner agencies and Youth Opportunities Unlimited. 3. Review/complete daily production reports. 4. Conduct daily inventory and inspection of equipment or materials used prior to and upon conclusion of tasks. 5. Serve as a mentor to youth participants. 6. Teach youth how to use graphic design software. 7. Introduce various techniques and procedures needed to get various graphic affects. 8. Make sure production is done in a timely manner and up to the requested specifications and quality. 9. Work with the other Youth Communications Supervisors to create beneficial educational programming and scheduling. 10.The final editor of the program magazine/newsletter. 11.Troubleshoot, manage and communicate issues that may arise on worksite. EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university in graphic design, digital art, art education, or related areas of study. QUALIFICATIONS: • Must be able to work the entire length of the program including training and youth orientation. • A strong and positive team player that can work diplomatically and effectively with their peers, as well as other staff and administration. • Excellent interpersonal skills capable of relating well to people of varied backgrounds and education levels in a courteous and professional manner. • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders; including employees and the general public. • Ability to motivate and mentor students in a manner that is culturally and emotionally appropriate. • Experience exercising initiative and good judgment in anticipating problems before they arise. • Great organizational and attention to detail skills. • Be flexible to handle potential changes in daily plans quickly. • Represent all partners in a professional manner. • 2 to 3 years of verifiable experience as a professional working directly in the media industry, social service, community-based arts organization, or public school system environment. • Demonstrated ability to develop curriculum and lesson plans that can support a diverse population in a culturally and socially competent manner. • Highly organized, with a positive attitude and capacity for completing required administrative tasks, assignments, lessons, procedures and documents in a timely manner is a must. • Creative, flexible, and highly motivated personality capable of handling and prioritizing multiple, time-sensitive tasks and responsibilities. • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present to youth and the public. • Must be proficient in using Adobe Suite.
